Assemble 11 at The Ace Hotel

assemble11_yfm

New York City’s Ace Hotel invited my friend and collaborator Pat Noecker, a.k.a. RAFT to host an ASSEMBLE event in their lobby this fall. The result was a performance of RAFT’s ensemble piece, “Transmissions, Long Tones in A and E” performed on Saturday, October 19 at 8 p.m. in the hotel’s lobby, for free to the public. The all-star ensemble brought together for the evening included Brian Chase (Yeah Yeah Yeahs), Sabisha Friedberg, Dana Schechter, Greg Fox (Guardian Alien/Z’s), J.G. Thirlwell (Foetus), Camilla Padgitt-Coles, Melissa Moore, Rachel Mason, Daniel Schlett and Pat Spadine (Ash Can Orchestra) and yours truly on video projections.

J.G. Thirlwell describes the Assemble experience thusly: RAFT gathers performers from NYC underground + experimental music scenes, scatters them around a room, and sets them loose — creating a personalized, fully immersive music experience that alters depending where you’re standing. The performance in its simplest form is 11 musicians working to sustain the notes of A and E.

This was one of my favorite performances of all time, and I feel incredibly honored to have been a part of it.

Noisey: Parkay Quarts Show Us Their New York In The Final Jansport Bonfire Session

Friday, October 18th, 2013

parkayquarts_yfm

I edited these videos featuring Parquet Courts talking about their adopted hometown of New York City and playing a concert in Williamsburg’s Havemeyer Park.

The band was kind enough to take us around their version of New York, which includes a graffiti’d shutter door store and a game of pickup basketball that has been going on since the sport’s inception.

Spun O Lith: Purity Control / Rebecca Gaffney / Matthew Caron / Peter Shapiro from Matthew Caron on Vimeo.

“Rebecca Gaffney’s Spun O Lith installation at Fitness Gallery, during which the split’s recording was taken. The video itself, mixed by Matthew Caron and Peter Shapiro, is full of eplileptic-averse flashing and uncanny valley-oblitering facial distortion. Guess it’s that time again to freak out the squares.”Mike Sugarman, Ad Hoc

I edited this episode of Vans House Parties featuring Les Savy Fav getting pedicures.

Tim Harrington and the rest of the dudes in Les Savy Fav share their standard pre-show rituals before their set at the House of Vans last month. Y’know, normal stuff like getting pedicures and celebrity gossip. It’s all about relaxation and awesome feet.

DREAMS 3.0: ARAABMUZIK // A$AP ROCKY // GRIMES // PICTUREPLANE // WEIRD MAGIC

Friday, November 16th, 2012

I cut this video of Araabmuzik doing his thing at 285 Kent in the summer of 2012. Weird Magic and Distrolord made the night happen, A$AP Rocky and A$AP Ty Beats came through to party, Ian Perlman shot the footage and the rest is history.

Over the summer, Brooklyn’s 285 Kent held one of its wildest parties of the year, bringing in an insane collection of guests. AraabMuzik, A$AP Rocky, A$AP Ty Beat$ and Grimes (doing a DJ set) all made the bill at Dreams, an event hosted by Weird Magic and Gustavo Guerra. Luckily for those of us who couldn’t make it out to Williamsburg, we now have some high quality video of the star-studded event. Check out that video up above to see AarabMuzik doing what he does best while the A$APs and Grimes enjoy. – Complex

Aaron Cohen at 350 Broadway

Thursday, October 11th, 2012

A couple of weeks ago Aaron Cohen and the Inner City Kids made it happen in 350 Broadway at one of our lauded in-store performances. Playing in support of his recently released Mishka Records mixtape Murk, the locked-in Cohen churned through highlights from that tape with steely intensity and some guests as well. Even if you weren’t there, you can relive the magic with these videos shot by our friend Matthew Caron. There’s even more awaiting your eyes over at our Vimeo. Enjoy! – Whole Milk

Carrie Wilds at 350 Broadway

Thursday, July 5th, 2012

Despite the surprising and torrential rain, a devoted crowd made their way out to our 350 Broadway location, and the glowing magenta storefront was temporarily transformed into an intimate performance space for the arresting Carrie Wilds. I’m sure you remember Carrie’s self-titled mixtape was recently released on ????? Records, and she was performing her material in front of a live audience for the very first time. After a quick set by Butterz’ Elijah, it was time for Ms. Wilds to take the stage, flanked by her lithe backup dancers. Burning through a collection of highlights from her mixtape, Carrie put the audience under her trance, her powerful vocals reverberating through the small space over pounding beats curated by DJ Shiftee and spun by Elijah. As far as debuts go, it’s hard to ask for more. Check footage from the show above, shot by Matthew Caron and Craig Sordyl, and see pics over at Noisey. – Whole Milk
